Cayuga Medical Center Provides New State-of-the-Art Laboratory

State of the art laboratory cultivates a safer work environment and upholds strict patient safety standards

In 2012, Cayuga Medical Center completed their state-of-the-art laboratory on their main campus. The lab provides state of the art equipment in order to better service patients, it also cultivates a safer work environment and employs environmentally friendly principals as well.

When entering the lab, it is hard to ignore the beauty of the natural light streaming in from the ceiling and windows, which blankets the array of high-tech equipment, lab technologists, and doctors in their high-tech home. Third generation pathologist and Medical Director of CMC’s laboratory services, Dr. Sudilovsky, stated that in all of his 22 years of experience, CMC’s lab is “the most beautiful lab I have ever been in.”

Aside from its obvious beauty, the overall lean design of the laboratory applies a single piece flow to space and motion, which allows technologists to work in an environment that is more efficient and organized than ever before.  Dr. Sudilovsky compared the old lab’s design to “a Porche engine in a 72’ Volvo… what the old lab lacked was infrastructure.” The old lab, built in the 1970’s, had compartmentalized design which reflected the technology and processes popular at the time. However, the lab today has an open, streamlined feel that facilitates the introduction of modern advancements in the ever-changing field of laboratory medicine. Dr. Sudilovsky is hopeful that the lab is equipped to grow alongside technological advancements that are bound to occur. “We are not going to find ourselves in an obsolete environment down the road in the next 5-10 years,” Sudilovsky states.

In addition to the lab’s methodically organized floor plan, visual cues such as labels have been added to machines, drawers, and equipment to help cultivate a safer, more organized facility. One of the biggest safety changes implemented in the lab is the dramatic reduction in noise level. Director of Laboratory Services, Anntoinette Burger urges newcomers to listen to the quiet environment of the lab, which exudes quality and accurate work. Burger stresses that the staff’s concentration is elemental in preventing errors. To help reinforce the importance of staff concentration, phone calls are now diverted away from lab technicians and signs hang throughout the lab stating, “undivided attention is important to help prevent errors.”

With the upscale construction, the facilities are now on par with the morale and abilities of the Cayuga Medical Center laboratory staff. Dr. Sudilovsky believes that the lab environment “creates and distills the culture of quality and innovation" more than ever before.

Cayuga Medical Center has also incorporated environmentally friendly aspects to the laboratory. The most apparent green initiative CMC has incorporated into the lab’s construction is the green roof. The roof provides a beautiful home to many species of plants, while also helping reduce the lab’s energy costs. CMC has received its LEED certification, which according to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) website, “provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home, or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality”.  As far as the lab project, CMC has achieved their environmental goals,  and the lab is performing as designed to reduce negative environmental impacts while improving occupant health and well-being.
