New Book, When Your Life is Touched by Cancer, donated to Cayuga Medical Center Patients

Ithaca, NY -- The Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes is donating 50 copies of Bob Riter’s new book, When Your Life is Touched by Cancer, to Cayuga Medical Center in recognition of the on-going collaboration between the two organizations. The book was recently released and is available in bookstores and libraries throughout the country.

Riter, Executive Director of the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, helps people sort out many issues involved with a cancer diagnosis.  A cancer survivor himself, Riter gently and insightfully addresses the issues that accompany a cancer diagnosis, especially those we think about, but hesitate to bring up. Such issues include: Is it reasonable to refuse treatment? How old is too old to treat cancer? Is alternative medicine worth pursuing? -- It is important for those with cancer to figure out what makes sense for them and then to communicate those wishes to loved ones and physicians.

“Much of the book is based on my conversations with patients, physicians, nurses, radiation therapists and other professionals at Cayuga Medical Center,” said Riter. “I’ve learned that while every cancer experience is unique, there are common questions that people stew over. I hope this book reassures patients that it’s okay to ask the questions they most want to ask.”

All proceeds from When Your Life is Touched by Cancer are being donated to the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes.

Bob Riter is the Executive Director of the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes in Ithaca, NY, an organization that provides support, information, and community to people affected by cancer. His involvement in the cancer community began in 1996 when he was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40. Bob writes about cancer from a variety of perspectives in his column for the Ithaca Journal. His essays have appeared in Newsweek and CR Magazine. He routinely speaks to college classes, civic organizations, and professional groups about the human side of cancer.
