February 15, 2010 - The Cayuga Heart Institute's Echocardiography Laboratory at Cayuga Medical Center was granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). The laboratory is one of the growing number of echocardiography laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be so recognized for it's commitment to high quality diagnostic testing. ICAEL is an independent, non-profit agency that evaluates the quality of these and other critical elements of an echocardiography lab prior to granting accreditation.
Echocardiography is a non-invasive test that has become the diagnostic standard in cardiology for detecting cardiac structure and flow patterns that may indicate disease or irregularities. It is an effective and important tool in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disorders and disease. This complex imaging technique relies on the experience and training of both the physician and sonographer whose interpretive and technical abilities determine the diagnostic accuracy of the exam. An estimated 10 million echocardiograms are performed annually in the US.
