The Cayuga Heart Institute at Cayuga Medical Center Achieves New Status as Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI

Ithaca, NY, October 17, 2013 – Cayuga Medical Center is proud to announce that the Cayuga Heart Institute has earned the prestigious full Chest Pain Center Accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). While CMC has achieved Chest Pain Center accreditation since 2010, this is the first time it has included PCI designation. PCI is the ability to open very diseased heart arteries - including during a heart attack. Cayuga Medical Center is one of only ten hospitals in all of New York State to achieve such a prestigious and highly sought after national accreditation.

To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI, the Cayuga Heart Institute engaged in rigorous reevaluation and refinement of its cardiac care processes in order to integrate the healthcare industry's successful practices and newest paradigms into its cardiac care processes. Protocol-based medicine, developed by leading experts in cardiac care, to reduce the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment are part of overall cardiac care service. The Cayuga Heart Institute's state-of-the-art heart care encompasses the entire continuum of care for the ACS patient and includes such focal points as dispatch, Emergency Medical System, emergency department, cath lab, Cayuga Medical Center's quality assurance plan, cardiac rehab, lifestyle change classes, and community outreach programs.

As an Accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI, the Cayuga Heart Institute at Cayuga Medical Center ensures that patients who arrive at the hospital complaining of chest pain or other symptoms of a heart attack quickly receive the treatment necessary during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved. "Hospitals with accredited Chest Pain Centers have improved patient-care delivery, outcomes, and survival rates among patients with acute heart attacks. Our cardiac team at the Cayuga Heart Institute has embraced rigorous processes to maintain our accreditation and earn this special PCI designation. This is the direct result of our highly skilled team's relentless focus on advancing cardiac care for our community and region," said Dr. Amit K. Singh, FACC FASNC, Medical Director of the Cayuga Heart Institute at Cayuga Medical Center.

The Cayuga Heart Institute at Cayuga Medical Center was first certified by the Society of Chest Pain Centers in 2010 to be a nationally accredited Chest Pain Center. The hospital uses the Chest Pain Center to define the protocol and steps for patient care. By becoming a fully accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI, the team at the Cayuga Heart Institute has enhanced the quality of care for all of the area's heart patients including those needing emergency PCI and continues to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to meeting and exceeding the highest national standards.
